The travel tumbler has never been dropped or even seen the inside of a dishwasher so I was very disappointed that the button to open/close the lid broke during regular use. The button mechanism operates with a very slim piece of plastic creating a slot. This snapped and I can see how the design makes it quite brittle. Otherwise, I loved this tumbler, the way it functions and fits in my hand. I really like the removable tea basket as well. I try to reduce my environmental impact so the fact that there doesn't appear to be a way to fix this is also disheartening.
Date published: 2020-02-21

Rated 1 out of 5 by kevinmcl from It's not bad, until it breaks after a year of use It's well designed, but not well executed. I have two. No more. Can't get the replacement tops anymore. The body is a decent vacuum-insulated bottle - about half as good as Z o j i r u s h i for temperature keeping. The top has a screw-on laser-cut screen that keeps the debris out of your mouth as you drink. The loose-tea steeping basket screws to that, so you can leave the leaves and drink through them, or remove to avoid over-steeping and still have the screen in place for drinking. That part is very well designed. The cap is hinged, spring-loaded, with a lockable one-handed release button. That works very well, until it breaks. The problem is the release button - when you press the bottom half, the button pivots around a hinge pin, and the top half releases the cap to open. The PROBLEM is that the hinge pin is held in place by two plastic tabs that are thinner than paper. After using it for about a year's worth of presses, one of those tabs breaks, a little later, the second one breaks, The button falls off, and you can't latch the lid closed anymore for travel. The same happens with Z o j i r u s h i flip-top vacuum-insulated bottles, indicating that at least the lids are made by the same supplier. It's a cheap component that is the "reliable" constant point of failure for ALL of DAVIDsTEAS' flip-top bottles. From the complaints on Reddit and many other forums, if you get as much as a year-and-a-half, you probably aren't using yours every day. That was my experience 3 times, now. I really love the rest of the physical design (never mind all the colors, I don't care about that, I crave practicality and quality), but this has been a problem for years and Davids refuses to address it. For a while before... and definitely since T went belly-up, I spent thousands of dollars at Davids, on Japanese green tea (gyokuro) and tea-related equipment, but this ongoing sore point has driven me away. In the photo, the aquamarine bottle latch is ready to fail (one side already broke) and the gray bottle has a homemade latch that my wife made from a piece of stiff wire. It keeps the top closed, but not firmly enough for travel. PS: In the ratings I didn't want to rate packaging, because I bought both of mine off the shelf in a David's store - there was no packaging. PPS: I don't think I'm flouting the posting guidelines by mentioning Z o j i r u s h i, because they don't do tea and they don't make tea-specific steeping bottles... they just happen to make fantastically insulative, slim-line vacuum bottles. Save your money and don't buy this flip-top Davids bottle.
Date published: 2021-10-16

Rated 1 out of 5 by Menthalo from Bad quality I bought this a year ago and it broke. I am unable to come up with a reason that is not deliberate planned obsolescence in order to keep selling more of the same to the gullible. I bought a second one because it was a color they had discontinued, so it was marked-down for quick clearance at the store in Bayview Shopping Centre, Ottawa, Ontario. At full price, I refuse to buy any more until they fix this seemingly-intentional point-of-failure. I have not found as nice and as practical a design at any of their competitors... yet... but it's a good design badly executed in a critical component.
HOWEVER... as a reward for reading this far, I can tell you that you can salvage the usefulness of the bottle by twisting some solid wire to make a home-made latch. You can also use a soldering iron or just heat a screwdriver to melt a little dip in the lip of the flip-top, so the wire loop has something to grip. It works well enough for just leaving the bottle on a desk to keep tea warm while you work. It would be ok in a cup-holder in your vehicle, or in a bottle-holder hiking belt or on a bike. But sadly, it can't be made tight enough to be leak-proof when tumbling around in your backpack or purse.
Answered by: kevinmcl

Date published: 2023-01-21

Do you have to pour the water into the mug first and then add the steeper?
