At DAVIDsTEA, feeling good is our number one priority. So how do we do that in the midst of a not-so-feel-good moment?
To be honest, we’re still figuring it out — and it will probably evolve and change — but one thing’s for sure: squeezing in a little self-care whenever we can is beyond necessary.

We’ve put together four simple-to-follow self-care rules that’ll help give you a new perspective, a fresh outlook, and get your body out of its social distancing funk.

Let’s self-care.
All together.

We’re not talking about radical changes. Just little things to make you & us feel better. The main idea behind our notion of self-care is for your body to get rid of unwanted toxins to reduce stress and feel healthier. These tips just help it along on this journey.

Tip#1

Hydrate

Given that the human body is made of approximately 60% water this shouldn’t come as a surprise. The first step in detoxing is to increase your hydration. Just about every part of our bodies, including our liver and kidneys aka the detoxification zone, depend on water to help get rid of the toxins we naturally absorb throughout the day. Water is also great for your skin, helping it to maintain its elasticity and suppleness. In short: it’s the perfect moisturizer.

On average, we should be drinking about 3 litres per day. Which is a lot of hydration. Luckily, it’s not just water that keeps you hydrated. In fact, any low-sugar drink works. And contrary to popular belief, a drink doesn’t have to be caffeine-free to be hydrating. So, sipping on that tea latte totally counts.

Tip#2

Get more
sleep

If you want to help your body eliminate toxins, you need to give it the time to do so. Sleep is often the first thing we cut back on when we’re feeling rushed or overwhelmed. But a good night’s sleep is extra good for detoxing. It’s regenerative, allowing your brain to reorganize, recharge. Have trouble nodding off at night? We have a tea for that.

Tip#3

Skip the after-work drink

So, you want to get as much of that “bad stuff” out of your system as possible? Limit how much you put in. Traditional detoxes often call for a complete ban on everything except the detox drink itself. Our suggestion isn’t as extreme, but by limiting how much alcohol and sugar you consume, or skipping it altogether, you give your body the space to do what it does best – rid your body of toxins.

Skipping that after-work drink is especially good for your liver, which has two main functions: metabolizing alcohol and eliminating toxins from your body. Multitasking has its advantages but so does focusing on one thing.

Tip#4

Move
your body

Regular exercise is not only a great mood booster, it’s essential for bringing balance to your body. Exercise boosts energy, helps keep you healthy and improves sleep. Staying active also keeps your natural detoxification system (i.e. kidneys and liver) thriving. (You cannot, however, sweat out toxins. That’s a myth.)

So just how much should we be moving? Experts recommend 150-300 minutes of moderate exercise per week and 75-150 minutes of vigorous exercise. Don’t cancel that gym membership just yet.
