Love this tea and the tin type!
This is a great tea, the caramel is not too overwhelming and it just has a fantastic mouth feel. It sort of coats your mouth and would be best enjoyed sitting in front of a fire on a cold, winter night. I don't get many of those in California, but on a cold foggy morning it also hits the spot!
I also want to say I love this tea tin type. Having the un-labeled metal tin with a cardboard cover is really helpful for future re-use of the tin once I run out of this tea/if I decide to not purchase more. I wish DT would make more tins like this, with the unlabeled tin below a cardboard topper!

Decent winter dessert tea, but not as expected?
I got this one as a large solo because I really liked the design, and I am absolutely in love with this tin. The cover around it is nice and bright and colorful and fits perfectly without sliding right off nor getting stuck. The tin underneath is sealed with a lid, keeping the tea safe with and without the outer cover.
The tea fills up a little less than half of the tin, which is a bit of a shame, but also to be expected.
The tea smells really good, very nutty and mostly like roasted hazelnuts. It has a very sweet scent to it, but since it contains brown sugar AND stevia extract, no surprise there. I generally don’t like stevia in anything, so I was apprehensive of getting this tea, but then the tin won me over.
As Hot Tea:
While steeping this for a hot tea, it smelled mostly like roasted nuts and brown sugar, which was really nice. I re-steeped it a second time (because I like to re-steep all my teas, it’s become a habit of sorts) and despite being a fruit infusion, it steeped fairly well the second time around also. Granted, it wasn’t as sweet and flavorful, but it still had that nutty, roasted taste to it and was rather pleasant to drink.
The first steep first looked fairly light until I stirred it, then everything got mixed up much nicer and turned a nice, darker color, so don’t forget to stir!
I’m not sure I really connected the taste with shortbread OR caramel, it reminded me more of one of those roasted nut mixes you can get at a winter market. It just tasted mild and nutty, and I quite liked it.
I drank it without milk and thought it might go well with cookies. Maybe it’s called caramel shortbread because you’re supposed to drink it while eating some caramel/shortbread? I can see them complimenting each other, at least, though I have no means of trying that combo at the current time.
As Tea Latte:
So I tried this tea as latte next, again with re-steeping it for a second cup. With frothed oat milk, there is definitely a caramel-like note coming through, maybe from the brown sugar? Maybe it just needed the milk to come through, or maybe I had more brown sugar in my scoops this time. Either way, it still has that very nutty taste to it, and reminds me more of a granola-type tea than shortbread, but it’s a pretty good tasting tea as a latte. I already liked it as hot tea, but the tea latte is way superior in terms of flavor.
(Which, to me, is strange, because I generally don’t add milk to my fruit infusions at all and don’t think they ever needed any milk, either. But oh well, I like trying new things.)
The second steep I did with 100° C water and for almost 10 minutes to make sure it wasn’t that much weaker than the first steep, and it worked well. Again, the stirring is absolutely necessary for this tea to really get that flavor and color evenly distributed throughout the cup.
It tasted mild and nutty, and as such even milder than the first steep, but when I let it sit for a few minutes while doing something else and came back to it, the whole cup tasted a lot more sour/tangy than before. It had a sort of berry note to it and reminded me of one of those Christmas cookies with the jam in the middle. Not unpleasant, but certainly surprising, because it definitely didn’t have that note before.
Since I had already finished my first cup, I don’t know whether the same would have happened to that cup if I had let it sit for a bit. Maybe this is the taste the other reviews talk about, in which case I agree, it is a little out of nowhere and overwhelming.
While it wasn’t unpleasant to me, it certainly wasn’t what I would expect, especially not of a tea named ‘Caramel Shortbread’.
If the rest of my tin tastes as it did during my first steep as tea latte, I will gladly buy this tea again, because that tasted really good and has a wintery feel to it that I often miss in other winter-themed teas.
I might try it iced at a later point, but for now I’m content having it as tea latte or hot tea.
Who would I recommend this tea to?
Somebody with a sweet tooth who likes dessert teas and nutty flavors. Also, due to the strange sour note in one steep, someone who doesn’t mind that sort of sourness in tea or who likes to experience different flavors in the same cup.
(Alternatively, somebody who drinks their tea fast enough to not have the cup turn sour for mysterious reasons.)
