So you’re wondering whether there’s a real David, right? Well, there is. David Segal. He’s a guy who just happens to like tea, and spent his early 20s wondering why it was so hard to get a halfway decent cup of it.

He also wondered why, in Sweden, if someone asked you to come up for a cup of tea, it meant you were about to be seduced. Whereas here it seemed to mean you were going to settle down into a sofa and watch TV reruns.

So he waited patiently for the Great Tea Revolution – when tea would be liberated from its place as a stodgy old lady drink or meditative zen accessory. When it would take on Swedish innuendos. When all those coffee venues would suddenly realize it was time to offer better tea.

That day never came. So in 2008, at the age of 27, he started DavidsTea in Montreal. It was a risk, but he had a vision of a new, more exciting tea company. And he figured there were other desperate tea drinkers out there.

The first DavidsTea shop opened on Queen St. in Toronto just a couple of weeks after David launched his online store. In sourcing his products, he focused on loose leaf tea, and on finding tea gardens and distributors from all over the world. He also made a point of finding blends that tasted just as good as they smelled. Plus, he prioritized affordable prices – so anyone could make a premium cup of tea.

As first-time customers quickly became regulars, he realized he was onto something. Other people also want more fun in their tea. They like his adventurous flavours and his tea martini kit. They feel comfortable with his untraditional attitude and enjoy chatting with staff about health benefits, taste nuances and storiesbehind the teas. They also like that David treats tea like fashion – with spring, summer, fall and winters collections of seasonal blends that come and go.

Today, David has a permanent collection of 135 teas, including top sellers like Coco Chai Rooibos, Jumpy Monkey Maté and Organic White Tiger. The dream is to bring the tea revolution to people across the country. To view a list of our locations click here.
